Do you want to know the best hotels in Sapporo for first-timers and families?
Sapporo is one of my favorite cities in Japan.
The ramen here is genuinely different from anywhere else in the country. The seafood is absurdly fresh. And somehow, most people still skip it and go straight to Tokyo or Osaka.
If Sapporo is finally on your itinerary, good. You made the right call.
In this guide, I picked five hotels I’d actually booked myself, grouped by neighborhood so it’s easier to decide where to base yourself.
Staying near Sapporo Station gives you easy JR access for day trips to Otaru and Niseko. Susukino puts you right in the food scene. Ramen Alley is steps away. And Odori Park is your best bet if you’re coming for the Snow Festival.
Different priorities, different neighborhoods. Let’s get into it.
Which area is best to stay in Sapporo?
I’ve been to Sapporo a few times now, and the neighborhood question always comes up.
Here’s the honest breakdown.
Sapporo Station
Sapporo Station is the easiest base if it’s your first time in the city. JR lines are right there, great for day trips to Otaru, Niseko, or Furano.
You’re also walking distance from the Clock Tower, Sapporo TV Tower, and Daimaru department store. The underground shopping arcade nearby is genuinely useful when Hokkaido winter hits and you do not want to be outside.

🤩 Sapporo Hotel by Granbell
Hotel price: ₱5,040+/night for 2 people (~$90/night) (see updated prices here)
This one only opened in April 2025, so everything is genuinely new. No worn carpet, no furniture that was probably nice five years ago.
It’s about a 5 to 7 minute walk from Sapporo Station (Exit 16), and there’s a Family Mart attached to the lobby. That sounds minor until you land at night and just want onigiri before bed.
Level 25 has a rooftop onsen with city views. Level 26 has a panoramic lounge with a French restaurant 🙂
If you can, request a Corner Junior Suite with floor-to-ceiling city views rather than the unit facing the neighboring building. One practical note: only 3 laundry machines for a 24-floor hotel, so go early morning or late at night.
Book this hotel because:
- Everything is brand new (opened April 2025)
- Family Mart in the lobby, open 24 hours
- Rooftop onsen on Level 25 with city views
- Free breakfast buffet with grilled fish (still thinking about this!)
- Self check-in kiosks and underground parking available
🤩 Mitsui Garden Hotel Sapporo West
Hotel price: ₱5,600+/night for 2 people (~$100/night) (see updated prices here)
Five minutes on foot from Sapporo Station, right next to Daimaru department store.
You’re also walking distance from Stella Place, the Clock Tower, and the fish market where you can get kaisen-don for breakfast. The underground shopping arcade nearby is genuinely useful. In summer heat or icy Hokkaido winters, you can stay indoors the whole time.
Rooms are spacious by Japanese hotel standards, which is saying something!
The public bath on the 2nd floor is a nice touch. They give you a free drink while you’re there, which sounds small but feels great after a full day of walking. Don’t be afraid to ask for another drink or two~ I know I did! 🙂
Worth noting: only one coin laundry machine for the whole hotel, so plan your timing around that.

Susukino
Susukino is where you want to be if food is the main reason you’re going to Sapporo. and it should at least be part of the reason.
Ramen Alley is here, what more can you ask for?! Izakayas everywhere. Fresh seafood restaurants within walking distance in every direction!
It’s also well-connected by subway, so getting around the rest of the city is easy.

🤩 Holiday Inn ANA Sapporo Susukino

If the food is the main reason you’re going to Sapporo, you want to be in Susukino. and this hotel puts you right in the middle of it.
Ramen Alley is literally steps away. The Nikka Whisky billboard is the landmark to look for; the hotel is right behind it.
Susukino subway station is a short walk, and the airport bus stop is about 5 minutes on foot.
Rooms are bigger than most Japanese hotels, which matters when you’re unpacking for a few days.
The lobby has a free amenities rack stocked with hair ties, razors, toothbrushes, and shower caps: the stuff you always forget to pack.
The breakfast buffet is one of the best in Sapporo: custom omelettes, Japanese seafood rice bowls, and Hokkaido milk straight from the tap OMG it’s about ¥700 (roughly ₱280) as an add-on and it is absolutely worth it!
One note for families traveling with elderly members: some rooms have elevated bathroom floors, so it’s worth requesting a standard room if that’s a concern.

🤩 Sotetsu Fresa Inn Sapporo Susukino
Hotel price: ₱3,360+/night for 2 people (~$60/night) (see updated prices here)
The most affordable hotel on this list, and the one guests rate most enthusiastically (including myself!)
Hosuisusukino Station is literally right outside the front door. You’re in Susukino, convenience stores everywhere, and Odori Park is about 10 minutes on foot.
Rooms are compact in the classic Japanese hotel way, but there’s storage under the beds for luggage, a 50-inch TV, and a microwave in the building.
What really stands out is the lobby. They stock bath salts, face masks, hair packs, skincare, and free coffee and tea.
There’s also an AI translation machine at the front desk and self check-in kiosks, which is a lifesaver when your Japanese is zero and your energy is even lower after a long flight.
Book this hotel because:
- Subway station right outside the front door
- Most affordable on this list, from around ₱3,360/night (~$60/night)
- Lobby stocked with bath salts, face masks, skincare, free coffee and tea
- Self check-in kiosks and AI translation machine at front desk
- Self-locking luggage storage for early arrivals and late check-outs
Odori Park
Odori Park is the obvious base if you’re coming for the Snow Festival (late January to February).
Sapporo TV Tower is practically next door. To get to Susukino, you walk through the Tanukikoji shopping arcade. It is flat, covered, and easy for kids and seniors even in icy weather. Sapporo Station is about 20 to 25 minutes on foot or a quick taxi ride.
Best hotels in Sapporo for first-timers and families (Odori Park area)

Some trips need actual space. kids, parents, extra luggage, all of it.
This is one of the very few hotels in Japan where you can book a loft or duplex suite.
Their Twin Suites fit up to 6 guests, and connecting rooms are available for bigger groups.
If you’re coming for the Snow Festival, this is your base. Odori Park is right there.
To get to Susukino, you walk through the covered Tanukikoji shopping arcade. Don’t worry, it’s flat and manageable for seniors and kids even on icy days.
Also, there’s a large public bath in the older wing, free laundry machines, and free massage chairs on site.

A few things to know before you book
- Snow Festival (late January to February): Hotels fill up fast and prices jump. Book at least 2 to 3 months ahead.
- Breakfast add-ons: The Holiday Inn ANA’s Hokkaido milk buffet is worth paying for. For the others, check whether the add-on makes sense or if you’d rather eat at the nearby market.
- Laundry: Several hotels here have 1 to 3 machines for the whole property. Go early morning or late at night.
- Seniors or mobility concerns: The Odori Park Holiday Inn and Mitsui Garden are both good picks. Flat routes, covered walking paths, easy elevator access.
- Halal food: There are halal-friendly restaurants in both the Susukino and Odori areas. Either neighborhood works.
